Our guide on how to clean a rusty saw is as simple as 7 steps. These steps should take you less than an hour. All you need to make sure you do is have the right supplies for effective cleaning. Always be careful when handling a saw and wear protective gloves.
Before start cleaning, make sure you wear a good pair of gloves and a mask. These will not only protect you from the sharp blade of your saw. Be extremely careful when cleaning your rusty saw. Safety first! Take the necessary materials mentioned above and proceed to step 2 to prepare the work surface.
Old newspapers will prove ideal for protecting your table or any surface you plan to work on. It will also make the process of cleaning the rusty saw easier. You will be able to remove the rust residue easily. Place the newspapers all over the work area, ideally in your garage or workshop.
With the help of your screwdriver, go ahead and remove the screws that hold the handle and blade together. Once you are done, place this handle and its screws somewhere where you think you won’t misplace them.
Here you will have to use scraper to remove most of the rust on your saw blade. All you will have to do is hold the razor blade carefully by its flat top area and simply scrape downwards. When you’re doing so, you can also wipe your saw and the razor blade with a paper towel or newspaper to remove the build-up of loosened rust residue.
Continue to work in a downward motion and away from your body. After the rust has been removed from one side of the saw, you can begin working on the other. At this point, it will be okay to see some random small specks of rust stuck to the blade. Don’t worry – we’ll remove them in the very next step. You will know how to clean a rusty saw in no time.
Knowing how to clean a rusty saw can be easier than you think. Get a hold of some fine-grit sand paper and Linseed oil and begin working on both surfaces in a circular motion. You will see now that the remainder of the rust will be getting removed as well. Just make sure that you rub gently as you wouldn’t want to scratch the metal on your blade.
This step will take the most time and when you’re done rubbing off the remainder of the rust formations – use a paper towel or newspaper to wipe off the build-ups of rust residue from your saw.
Using your paper towels or newspaper again apply some WD-40 Multifonction Product on the clean saw blade. By doing so you will ensure that the blade doesn’t build-up rust again and repels moisture. The product should be allowed to sit on the blade for about 10 minutes before moving onto the next step.
