They are often commonly used so it’s best to learn how to maintain your garden shears or other tools so that they last you a long time.
You’ll find that the same techniques used to sharpen garden shears will also be used for other blades. Always take care with sharp objects and wear safety gloves. So, let’s begin.

Step 1
Oil or soak your sharpening stone
You need to start with the sharpening process first to maintain your garden shears. Some sharpening stones or whetstones require you to soak them in water before you use them. Other tools simply require for you to dab them in just a little bit of oil. To find out, just look for the instruction manual that came with your stone.
Step 2
Disassemble your pruners (optional)
Not all garden shears or tools have been manufactured in a way that they can be disassembled. Those tools that discourage disassemble should be left how they are for the whole process. Only disassemble them if you feel comfortable too.
Step 3
Dish soap or water
The next step to maintain garden shears is to wash your blade. If you’ve gone ahead and disassembled your pruners, they give all the parts an individual bath. Naturally, if you haven’t disassembled your tool, then you will have to wash them as a whole item.
Either way, use a wire sponge and some dish soap to clean the blade. You’ll find that just doing this will portray some amazing results. Not only will the grit have been removed, but the garden shear will look almost new – but we haven’t even begun yet.
Step 4
Sharpen the blades of your garden shears to maintain them
Techniques to do this will vary according to different experts or even the shapes of your sharpening stones or whetstones.
In every case, you will have place the stone and blade in contact and just feel for the right angle. When you’ve found the perfect angle, just begin moving the stone against the blade to cause some abrasion on its edge. The method in which you move the stone, however, will depend completely on the type of tool you are using. Be careful when doing this step.

Step 5
Lubricate your garden shears
Once you are done with the sharpening process, it’s time for to lubricate garden shears with the help of WD-40® Multi-Use Product. With this product, you will have lubricated and prevented rust from forming over your garden shears. While using the product, use enough of the product to coat the surface of the sections you’re targeting.
If you think too much of the product has been applied on them, just use a clean rag to wipe off the excess. Re-apply WD-40® Multi-Use Product each time you clean your garden tools.
