How to degrease a bike chain

Things you will need:

  • Bike stand
  • Rag
  • Clean cloth/Towel
  • Small brush/Toothbrush
  • Clean water, Hosepipe if possible
  • WD-40 Bike Degreaser


Is your bike chain starting to stick or is your bike’s performance starting to slip? You may need to degrease your bike chain! This simple step by step guide will help you to degrease a bike chain in no time at all! Letting you get back to enjoying your bike.

Step 1: Get the bike set up

Firstly, you will need to place your bike onto a bike stand, this will you to easily access all parts of the bike and also allow you to work on the bike freely and safely. Make sure the rear wheel can turn freely and be sure to place a rag below the chain to soak up any excess liquid.


Step 2: Apply Degreaser

You can now apply the WD-40 Bike Degreaser to the chain, make sure you spray the WD-40 Bike  Degreaser onto the chain where it comes into contact with the gears whilst rotating the chain in an anti-clockwise direction. This will ensure a constant amount of WD-40 Bike Degreaser is applied to tackle any build up of dirt or grime on the drivetrain.


Step 3: Remove heavy grime

If you have some heavy or stuck on grime or dirt remaining, you may need to agitate with a small brush or toothbrush, this will remove the remaining build ups of dirt and leave the chain clean.


Step 4: Clean the bike

To finish, clean the chain and bike with clean water, preferably from a hosepipe. This should remove all excess product and also any remaining dirt. Dry the chain with a clean cloth or towel.



Regularly cleaning and degreasing your chain can help to reduce wear and improve the performance of the bike’s chain, leaving you to enjoy your bike and rides.
