It can be a challenging job to remove rust off metal, but its isn’t an impossible one. There are several approaches to getting the job done. Which method works best depends entirely on the type of object you are working on.
Here is our easy guide explaining how to clean rust off metal with different strategies.
Scrubbing Away the Rust
If your rusted item is too large or cannot be sprayed with anti-rust agents, then we would recommend the simplest trick in the book – scrubbing. You will have to get your hands on some steel wool, wire brushes, or some sandpaper to clean the rust off certain parts of the intended object.
Simply scrape and scrub over the different affected areas until you see the rust flaking off and finally disappearing. This strategy, however, works best with rust formations that don’t run too deep over the surface of the object.
Drown and Dissolve the Rust in Vinegar
If you are working with rusted objects, submerge them entirely into a bowl or glass full of white vinegar. Once you have drowned the object, you will be able to see the clear liquid dissolving the rust or at least loosen it up enough so that you could wipe it clean.
If you see an additional layer of rust left on these objects, all you will have to do is rinse the object with cold water and then repeat the process. If, however, you see that the white vinegar isn’t doing much more for these objects and neither is a wire brush, then you need something much stronger. Now, it will be time to pull out the commercial rust cleaner products.
How to Clean Rust off Metal with WD-40
This multi-use product has been known to be a great counter agent against rust and as a preventative measure as well. All you will have to do is soak the rusted item with WD-40 and then scrub over it using a wire brush.
You can go ahead and test small areas of the rusted object to check whether WD-40 damages it. If you apply WD-40 regularly on surfaces that are prone to rust, you will never see the rust return. If standard WD-40 products don’t seem to work as efficiently as you imagined, then you can also get yourself the WD-40 Specialist Penetrant. This product has been specially designed to penetrate grime and rust so that it can be easily removed from any surface. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly if they come into contact with the product.
There is no way that you will still be left with a rusted surface after these three strategies. The once reddish-brown, ugly looking metal object will now look as good as new.
