How to Repair Your Patio Door

Learning how to do your patio door repairs on your own can be very simple. These simple repairs will make your patio’s sliding doors as good as new – without the extra costs of hiring a contractor. Learn how to go about repairing common problems with your patio door and be free of any such hassles.

How to Repair Your Patio Door

Common Patio Door Repairs

1.    Clearing the Sliding Door Track

If this is the problem you’re facing with your patio doors, then the very first thing you need to do is check for grime and dirt on the patio door’s track. Remember that every contaminant that comes from the outside – from hair to mud – get caught up in these. All of these contaminants then latch on together to form grime. So, you already know that this particular patio repair will require a little elbow grease.

2.    Removing the Door

A part of fixing patio doors is removing sliding patio doors from their hinges to examine them closely. You need to know how to do this before proceeding with this step. Sliding patio doors tend to be much heavier than screen patio doors and to remove these, you will need to gain access to roller adjusters. These can be found at the very bottom of these doors. All you would need to do is use their screw mechanisms to retract their rollers.

Once this has been done, you will notice that the rollers have given you enough space to angle out the sliding doors from their tracks. Now, go ahead and remove the sliding panel doors. Check them for warps or other damages.

3.    Replacing the Locks

Locking mechanisms on patio doors are usually hook-style locks that double into their door handles. These locks use springs that are connected to their handles. Even though it may seem so – you really wouldn’t need much expertise about these locks to make your DIY repairs.

If you notice the spring has broken in the internal mechanism, then all you would need to do is replace it with a similar style lock. These are easily available at any hardware store and opening up the patio door handle is quite easy. This would especially be the case if you have little experience fixing things all over your house.

A Little WD-40 Will Help with Patio Door Repairs

Once you have fixed your patio door and cleaned it thoroughly, you will naturally want to slide it back onto its tracks. So, if you have some WD-40 lying around in your home, apply some on the rollers. Now, carefully place the lower roller onto their tracks and then proceed with the top tracks.

Now that the sliding patio door is in place, give it a few test slides to check whether your problem is solved. See! You don’t need to hire a contractor for patio door repairs.
