Whether you’re fond of power tools or handheld ones, they need to be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent rust. If you learn how to clean tools and maintain then regularly, you will have increased each of their useful lives while making sure that unsightly brownish-red build up never enters your garage.
Before we teach you how, you need to add just one more product into your tool box or elaborate workbench. Get yourself the WD-40 specialist degreaser because this is the best solvent in the market for the job.

Let’s Learn How to Clean Tools
You’ve seen how rust and grease tend to build up on your handheld tools and how this makes the job extra difficult and messy. Now don’t just leave these tools to rot under the kitchen sink or in the garage. These tools require a minimal amount of care as most of them develop small cracks or their sharp ends become blunt. So much so, that these tools just might shatter if they face hard impact on-the-job.
How to Clean Tools With WD-40 Specialist Degreaser
Now don’t ask us how to clean tool with household products because the only difference between WD-40 and a DIY solution is that the former gets the job done more efficiently. With DIY solutions, you won’t be able to prevent the rust from coming back will you?
That said, go ahead and pick your first victim, coat it with WD-40 and let it sit for about 5 minutes so that formula loosens up the build-up of grease. After the recommended amount of time has passed, begin wiping over the grease using a lint-free cloth.
Still see some room for improvement? Well, douse your choice of tool in WD-40 again and wait another 5 minutes. After this, get your hands on some steel wool and begin scrubbing at those stubborn grease stains. When you’re happy with what you see, just rinse the tool with some lukewarm water.
Notice that this product has such a light formula that no residue is left behind.
Now Let’s Attack the Rust
For this part of the job, you have 2 options. You could either get yourself a second WD-40 Rust Remover or use a simple DIY home solution. The same rule applies though – with WD-40 you can expect better and quicker results.
Let’s assume you chose the home solution. If this is the case, then all you will be needing would be a bucket full of vinegar so you can add all your tools into the solution at the same time. If you think the rust build-up is extensive then you can also choose to leave your tools in the mixture overnight (told you WD-40 works faster).
In the morning, you can begin scrubbing at your tools with some steel wool or an old toothbrush. Once all the rust is removed, rinse them thoroughly and dry them with paper towels or a blow dryer to prevent further oxidation. If you wish to prevent the rust from coming back, you could coat the tools with some coconut oil and store them in a moisture-free place.
Be sure to wash your hands after you come into contact with the product.
