How to cleaning pellet stoves: maintenance with specific products

Many find themselves having to clean pellet stoves, as in Italy alone about two million families partially or totally heat their homes with a pellet stove or fireplace.

Pellet stoves are a heat source that are becoming evermore appreciated for their ease of use, despite the fact that the price of the best pellets has gradually increased over the years, and therefore the economic implications of this type of heating also continue to be significant.

Like all the other machines we use at home, pellet stoves require some maintenance, and as is the case with any other appliance, there are many tasks you can do on your own while those of greater complexity must necessarily be left to technicians.

Pellet stove owners must basically see to their constant cleaning, but if they have a minimum propensity for manual work, they can go a step further and perform simple operations that significantly reduce any “stops” due to various types of malfunctions.

Cleaning pellet stoves

An owner can do about 90% of the necessary activities in terms of cleaning. Of course, the cleaning must be carried out with the stove completely cold in all its parts.

Proper maintenance of pellet stoves involves the following operations:

  • Daily, using a good ash vacuum to totally eliminate the combustion residue that has accumulated in the burner, in the burn pot/collection tray and in the surrounding area.
  • Weekly, removing the moving parts of the burner, such as the burn pot and the back of the burner to eliminate residues
  • Some stoves have a flap that can be used to insert a brush to clean the air access channel.
  • The fan itself fills with a lot of environmental dust and must be vacuumed blade by blade. In some models it is easily accessible, while in others it is not and must be dismantled, and becomes an operation to be carried out by a maintenance technician.

What products can you use to clean pellet stoves?

The stove’s operating mechanisms can be accessed from the back. Cleaning the electrical contacts of the various components, which can be dirty, is quite useful. The pellet stove must be disconnected from the power supply in order to do this.

We use WD-40 Specialist Fast Drying Contact Cleaner, which has a formulation capable of effectively dissolving the grease, different deposits and condensation on electrical or electronic equipment, including delicate materials. The product quickly penetrates into the most difficult to reach areas, drying quickly and without leaving residues. It restores electrical conductivity by eliminating the danger of short circuits. Its non-conducting formula with rapid evaporation leaves no residue and is compatible with all metals, plastics and rubbers. WD-40 Specialist Fast Drying Contact Cleaner is available with the double position system, which lets you switch from a large spray to a precise application.
