How to Help your Toilet Flush Work Better

The components of a toilet flush are constantly immersed in water, and if the water hardness (calcium carbonate content) in your home is rather high, deposits can form that compromise its correct functioning.

How to Help your Toilet Flush Work Better

Toilet flush characteristics and problems

  • The most frequent malfunction of toilet flushes is caused by the float, which allows the water to continuously flow into the toilet. This issue can usually be solved with careful internal cleaning, since the components of the toilet flush are almost all made of plastic.
  • There are normally two types of toilet flushes in the bathroom: external (standard or wall) or built-in. It’s easier to work on the first, while it’s a little more difficult on the second, but the steps to be carried out are identical.
  • After closing the central water supply valve (or the small tap that is sometimes located immediately before the flush), empty it and lift the lid of the tank.

What to do

The ring nut of the float must be loosened, but never force it. It can usually be loosened simply with your hands. Raise the float to identify any screws or other mechanisms that let you remove the float to be cleaned, then place it in a basin with water and anti-limescale liquid: alcohol vinegar is excellent in this case. The piece must be left to soak for a few hours. Once the larger deposits have substantially dissolved, finish cleaning the float by applying a little bit of WD-40 Multi-Use Product with a stiff bristle brush or an abrasive sponge.

Place the float back into position and connect it to the drive mechanism and the supply pipe. Use WD-40 Flexible on every joint of the internal system which, thanks to the dispenser with a flexible straw, lets you treat areas that would otherwise be difficult to lubricate. If there are gaskets, make sure they aren’t worn: they must be replaced if necessary. Put the lid back on and restore the water supply. The float must stop the flow of water once the toilet is full. If necessary, you may need to regulate the stroke of the float.

Another thing that‘s good to lubricate is the toilet flush handle, which sometimes gets stuck: a quick spray of WD-40 Multi-Use Product solves the problem in this case as well.
