How to Remove Rust from Metal

When your metal instruments start to rust, throwing them away is not always an option. There are various techniques that can help you remove rust from metals and turn them back into their original condition. You can either opt to remove the accumulated rust through household ingredients or buy specialized chemicals removers.

Regardless of which method you choose, removing rust requires extensive take time and effort. However, by going through the techniques below, you will understand how to remove rust from metal surfaces in all kinds of scenarios.

How to Remove Rust from Metal

Less Severe Rust

Sometimes, the rust on your tools is not much, but you still want to remove it. In such cases, you can use baking soda to remove the rust from the metal surface. To start off, you need to rinse the metal first and then shake it dry. Following that, sprinkle baking soda on the item slowly and don’t be alarmed if you see that the powder is sticking to the damp parts of the surface.

Make sure that the baking soda covers all the rusted parts. After that, leave the metal item and wait for an hour to start working with the metal again. Once it is time, take a metal brush or steel wool and remove the rust down the metal. After removing the rust completely, rinse it with water and dry it using a towel until all the moisture is soaked.

As mentioned above, this technique is ideal for thin layers of rust. The ingredient used in the technique is cheap and easily available. Besides that, you can use the same technique for thin metals that may get damaged through other techniques. However, the soda only loosens up the rust a bit, and you have to apply force with the scouring pad to remove the rust.

Moderate Rust

If the rust on your instruments is moderately high, you can submerge it in a solution of white vinegar to loosen the rust accumulated on your item. If your item is too big to out in a bowl or container, consider soaking a rag in white vinegar and then wrap the rag around the rusted area.

After that, leave the rusted metal overnight and start working on it in the morning. Use steel wool, a metal brush or a scouring tool to scrape of the rust from the surface. Compared to the previous method, it requires minimum effort to remove the rust from the item.

Extremely Severe Rust

For high concentrations of rust, you might need citric acid to do the job for you. The item is not easily available in the market but is potent against thick layers of rust. Furthermore, like the vinegar, citric acid makes the process of removing rust much easier.

All you have to do is to put some hot water in a bowl and add two to three tablespoons of citrus acid. After that, immerse the item into the solution and let it set in the solution overnight. In the morning, use a brush to remove the flecks of rust on the metal surface, rinse it with warm water, and dry it clean with the help of a towel.

Remove Rust From Metal with WD-40

You can also use WD-40 to remove rust from your metal tools and instruments, simply spray on the WD-40, leave for a few moments and simply wash the solution off.

Although many homeowners throw away their tools once they start to rust, they can benefit from them longer if they can just follow these techniques.

Please wash your hands thoroughly if you come into contact with all the solutions used.
